Bus Services
For the most actual data and booking, look at http://www.buseireann.ie
The Irish bus system is mainly, but not completely, run by Bus Éireann. There are several companies who run just one or two lines. Information about bus services and timetables proved hard to obtain but I keep searching, asking and updating.
It takes to much space to put all the timetables on this page. That is why I put only a selection of the timetables on this website. For the other lines I just mention the number, origin and destination plus the places the service passes. The available timetables can be found on a separate page mentioned behind the named bus service.
The following services are on the road in county Clare:
- nr. 51: Ennis - Limerick
- nr. 333: Ennis - Doonbeg
[Ennis - Corofin - Willbrook/Kilfenora - Ennistymon - Lahinch - Milltown Malbay - Spanish Point - Quilty - Craggaknock - Doonbeg]
- nr. 336: Ennis - Kilkee
[Ennis - Lissycasey - Knockalough - Kilrush - Kilkee]
- Ennis - Galway
- Ennis - Shannon Airport (timetable: Shannon - Ennis v.v.)
[Ennis - Clarecastle - Newmarket on Fergus - Carrigoran - Shannon - Shannon Airport]
- Ennis - Milltown Malbay
[Ennis - Inagh - Milltown Malbay]
Taxi's & Hackneys
Hackney? What is that?
A hackney looks quite similar to a normal taxi, but it is just a
bit different.
There are three main differences:
1) A taxi service is in principal a 24-hour service, run by a company. Hackneys are independent one-man (or husband and wife)-companies, usually operating part time.
2) A taxi can be called or beckoned on the street. A hackney can only take pre-arranged runs (formally, of course).
3) A taxi service can usually be found in cities (like Ennis) while the hackneys service the rural part of the county.
Both taxi's and hackneys do runs throughout the county against rates that are quite low. Because of the under-development of train- and bus transport, it is a nice alterative.

Trains
For the most actual data and bookings, look at http://www.irishrail.ie
Iarnród Éireann (or Irish Rail) provides a limited number of runs between Ennis and Limerick/Dublin. All runs to Dublin haves transfers in Limerick of Limerick Junction. Dublin Heuston Station has a bus link with Dublin Airport.
For the summarized timetable, look here
Iarnród Éireann is working hard on the renovation and upgrading of the line Ennis - Athenry. Reopening of this connection, which supplies a connection to Galway, is not expected before 2008.
Air Transport
As far as I know there are five airports in County Clare. But the 3 airports on the Aran Islands en the one close to Milltown Malbay are only accessible for light, small aircrafts. It is beyond dispute that Shannon International Airport is de main airport for County Clare and her economy (and far outside of county Clare.)
There are several airlines flying on Shannon. For The Netherlands for services are important:
- Schiphol - Dublin - Shannon; flown by Aer Lingus [Down to two connections a day.]
- Düsseldorf/Weeze (Germany, just over the border near Venray) - Shannon; flown by RyanAir
- Brussel-Zuid (= Charleroi, Belgium) - Shannon; flown by RyanAir
Other relevant airports:
- Galway Airport - Schiphol; flown by Aer Arann [starts first of May, average price-range]
Connections on airports further away are not listed. But for people who want to travel around I also point at the existence of airports near Derry (Northern Ireland), Belfast (Northern Ireland), Knock, Sligo, Waterford, Cork and Dublin.
